The Story of Lock, Shock and Barrel (Inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas)
By Khanada Taylor

Once upon a Halloween
Three little orphans, who were very mean
Were all alone, with no family and no names
And in every way, they were really quite strange

They lived in the bathroom
Of an old abandoned house
With bats in their attic
And a little pet mouse

They liked to catch roaches and spiders and rats
They liked to wear costumes with tall pointed hats
And on Halloween they were happy and gay
For Halloween was by far the best holiday!

But this Halloween wasn't like all the rest
For these three little orphans in their horrible dress
When at the first door they cried "trick or treat"
A wicked surprise they were soon to meet

The door opened slowly and looking a fright
There stood an old woman all hunched back and white
She bade them to enter and said drippy sweet
"Come in my dear children. I'll give you a treat."

They came to her kitchen so dark and so small
With hundreds of pictures all over the wall
And there on her table to their delight
Lay candy and cookies piled up to the light

She said, "It's for you." As she piled up their plates
So the three little orphans just ate and they ate
And when they were done she said, "Clean up your mess."
But they threw firecrackers that lit up her dress

They ran with laughter into the night
And hid in the graveyard way out of sight
Then slowly they realized they weren't feeling so well
And held their small stomachs that started to swell

They laid to rest there small aching heads
And died one by one, there on the hedge
Alone and abandoned, would no one care
About the three orphans who liked to scare?

The Pumpkin King strolled through the dark gloomy night
As he was wont to do after causing a fright
He discovered the orphans lying prone in their place
And a frown of concern crossed his bony face

He waved his long fingers and said with a screech
"Arise my small orphans and come with me."
Then slowly each orphan came to their feet
And looked upon Jack thinking, "He looks so neat!"

He patted each one on top of the head
Saying, "My three little ones, do you know you are dead?"
They grinned and jumped and shouted with glee
"Oh yes, dead is the only way to be!"

Jack took their small hands and said with a groan
"Follow me my young ones, and I'll take you home."
They skipped and they sang as he led the way down
Where they found their true family in Halloween Town!
A poem I wrote some years ago inspired by one of my favorite films, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Preview image is a shot of a tiny doodle I did to accompany the story. Hope you like it.

I like this. A lot...cleaner than what I am working on for their back stories.
